Do I like you raw? - Short story for the writing contest of Boekenkrant
In May I participated in a writing contest of Boekenkrant. It was a short story of up to 1500 words, with the subject of 'contact'.
It is not an autobiographical story, despite the fact that there are recognizable elements in it. And no, unfortunately I did not win 😉. In fact, I wasn't even in the top 5. 😂
“Hey, get out of the way. You block the whole sidewalk,” grumbles a passing lady. Well, lady... She has done her utmost to raise her prestige from middle-aged to a few years younger with the help of clearly cheap and overcrowded clothing. The intense colors and her makeup ruin the result of her efforts.
Nervously I step aside, fidgeting at the hem of my jacket. With high red cheeks, I gently stammer: “Sorry,” as I shift my attention from the unkind woman to the café across the street. Why the hell did I go?
Two weeks earlier
“I'm sorry, Jennie, you just don't fit in the team,” my boss tells me. As usual, I can't do more than get a color, nod and quietly leave the building.
