Sometimes the terms keyboard and digital piano are used interchangeably. Although the term “electric keyboard” can be used to describe both, there are obvious differences between keyboards (portable keyboards) and digital pianos. These differences come down to size, features, and cost.

Weight difference

  • Portable keyboards are just that, portable. They usually weigh less than 20 kilos. and have a smaller range, with 61 and 49 key models most common. Optional keyboard stands can be offered with the instrument at an additional cost, but they can be played on top of a table and they can also be easily stored.
  • Digital pianos aren't unattractive, but they're usually meant to sit on top of a custom -built stand. They can weigh 25 to 60 kilos and usually come with 61, 76 or 88 keys.
