Do you remember? : Barend the Bear

After the Frenchman Claude Laydu saw on German television how a presenter told the children at the beginning of each evening that it was time to go to bed, he thought it would be nice to have a brown bear do this. The bear was named Nounours ('ours' is the French word for bear), in Dutch it became Barend. Together with the sandman, Barend flows on a cloud every night to climb down with a rope ladder. Then he visits the children Klaasje and Pimpernel to tell them a story before sleeping.

After wishing them good night, he returns to his cloud, after which the sandman puts the children to sleep with his sand. In the Netherlands, the series was originally broadcast by the NCRV. But because preschool children liked to watch it and there were hundreds of episodes available, the KRO also participated from 24 October 1964. But these broadcasters could only broadcast from half past eight, which many parents thought was too late. Also, toddlers did not understand why Barend could be seen one day and the next day could not be seen. For this reason, the NCRV and the KRO brought the broadcasts to the NTS after more than a year and the series was on display daily at 7 o'clock.

Barend even got his own magazine. When at the end of August 1965 the friendly French bear was replaced by the German Klaas Often, the NTS was overwhelmed with requests from children and their parents to bring Barend back. In France, new episodes were still made, now also in colour. In the summer of 1968, Barend would return again on Dutch television.
