Star Trek is originally an American science fiction television series designed by Gene Roddenberry, which was broadcast from 1966 to 1969. Eventually, the Star Trekuniversum grew into a successful media ranchise with seven television series, an animated series, thirteen feature films, dozens of computer games and hundreds of books, comic books, technical manuals and encyclopedias. Furthermore, there was a Star Trek theme park in Las Vegas between 1998 and 2008, called Star Trek: The Experience, and Star Trek conventions are regularly held around the world: big gatherings for fans (the 'Trekkies' or 'Trekers'), where actors from the series are often invited.
Roddenberry invented a utopian future world, in which a united Earth has solved most of the modern world problems: pollution, hunger, poverty and conflict between people are largely a thing of the past. Through inventions such as synthetic replicators and faster-than-light technology, humanity, with the help of extraterrestrial peoples, has founded colonies in the galaxy. Humanity, together with some extraterrestrial peoples, has established an umbrella organization of worlds: the United Federation of Planets. The stories in the various Star Trekmedia follow mainly the officers and civilians employed by Starfleet, the military research institution of the Federation which, with its space fleet, performs diplomatic and investigative missions and also forms the armed forces.
