#pingoruine ๐ A pingo (Inuktitut for small hill) is a spherical hill that develops in an area with permafrost where by expanding frost/freezing groundwater (hydrostatic pressure) a layer of frozen soil becomes lifted. The core of a pingo, which is sometimes barely smaller than the total pingo itself, consists of a lens shaped body of pure ice. Pingos grow up to 90 meters high with a cross section of sometimes more than 2 kilometers and are usually round or oval in shape. Contemporary pingos are found in continental tundras and are predominantly between 65 and 75 degrees north latitude. By tearing the top layer, the ice layer is exposed to the sun and then a crater or more can form.
In the Netherlands, pingo ruins are mainly found in the border area of Groningen, Friesland, head of Overijssel and #Drenthe . One of the largest is that of Lake Mekeler, between Gees and Nieuw-Balinge. This was designated by the province of Drenthe in 2015 as a geological monument [. A beautiful specimen is the Esmeer in Huis ter Heide (near Norg). In the head of Overijssel, in Steenwijkerwold, lies a small pingoruine
