Having to drink water — at any time of the day — is a healthy habit. Water is essential to keep the body hydrated; the heart and mind healthy. It can also help you keep your metabolism at a good pace, prevent leg cramps and prevent constipation. But is it true that drinking a glass of water before bedtime reduces the risk of heart attacks?
The most popular research on this topic comes from a study conducted at Loma Linda University in California. Public health doctor Jacqueline Chan and colleagues published in 2002, in the American Journal of Epidemiology, that drinking five or more cups of water a day reduced the chances of dying from a heart attack.
In this study, 8,280 men and 12,017 women were followed for six years. People who drank two or fewer eight-ounce glasses of water a day were more at risk of heart attack. According to the dietary records in the study, participants lead a healthy lifestyle, ate foods high in whole grains, and drink more water, milk and juices. Chan and his group commented that perhaps people who drink more water are more aware of their health and are more active.
When studying the body, this is approximately 60 percent water. Water is used to remove toxins from the body, to transport nutrients from your cells and to keep the tissues of your nose, throat and ears moist enough. Drinking water throughout the day is ideal, plus there are other reasons to drink water before sleep:
Drinking water when you get home after a night of heavy drinking can prevent a hangover. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it makes you urinate more, which increases your chances of becoming dehydrated. Drinking two to three glasses of water before trying to go to sleep can prevent dehydration, as well as headaches and muscle aches.
If you get dehydrated you may feel exhausted and tired, but not in a way that helps you sleep. Drinking water throughout the day replenishes the water your body loses through sweat, urine and bowel movements. Breathing also causes you to lose water. A general rule of thumb is to drink eight to nine glasses of water a day, but your doctor can advise you better.
When you exercise at night, your body's need for water increases during and after exercise. Drink water after exercise to rehydrate and re-energize.
