Dutch folk singer sings Unchained Melody
#liedjevandedag Yesterday on the Internet a good question for someone. Even the AD didn't know at first who the Dutch boy on the Spanish beach with golden throat was. While the Dutch #volkszanger is already fairly well known in the world of #zingen .I was surprised that even AD #krant didn't know it was about Mart Hoogkamer. The #zanger from the Dutch #levenslied sang a song in English this time, namely Unchained Melody.
The original
The original dates from 1965, sung by Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield a.k.a. The Righteous Brothers. The song unchained melody is only sung by Bobby and is written by Hy Zaret and the melody is made by Alex North. Everyone thinks that the original is from them only that is not quite right. Alex North had already made the melody for his 1955 movie Unchained. This song sung by Porgy and Bess sang the soundtrack of the film. In 1963 an up tempo song was made from the 1955 version and released by Vito & The Salutions. Bobby Hatfield later took this song again under his own name and stayed in 4th place. In 1990 this song was released by The Righteous Brothers in the Dutch #top40 a real number 1 hit (2 stayed at number 1 for 2 weeks) because the song was used in the movie Ghost.
So the original is credited to The Righteous Brothers from 1965 but this is not entirely true if you are going to delve into the origin of the song. The number has gained fame by them in is therefore a kind of assigned to their.
The song is also sung by Elvis Presley (1977), U2 (1989), Gareth Gates of the English Idols (2003), Cyndi Lauper (2005), Barry Manilow (2006) and an Italian version (Senza Catene) of Il divo in 2006. In 2012 Gerard Joling sang this song in the best singers of the Netherlands.
