Earthquakes - Iceland
We went to Iceland in the summer of 2022. Here, one day before the Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted, we walked around the volcano.
We've come very close to the crater. During the walk, we felt an earthquake on top of a mountain. This was quite exciting. When we were at the bottom of the crater, we heard a crazy sound coming from the volcano. It looked like the volcano was growling or humming.
That same night, we slept in Reykjavik and had an earthquake twice in the night. I experienced the first one with our whole family. The second time, everyone was sleeping well and I woke up. The whole room was shaking. All the hangers in the cupboards went back and forth and it looked like I was in that crazy house in the Efteling. This earthquake was also the worst and for a moment I thought if I should wake everyone up and maybe leave the apartment, or yes, what are you actually doing?
Fortunately, before I was able to make that decision, it stopped again. The other night, I lay with one eye open. I wasn't completely comfortable with it, but I found it a very special experience.
The next day, our day of departure, we later heard that the volcano had erupted there. Incredibly special to have been so close and to have experienced the signs of a volcanic eruption.
