Education in Venezuela during the last years in intensive care
#educacin Since 2013, Venezuela has been going through a profound economic, political and social crisis, the magnitude of which has led various international organizations to classify the situation as a “complex humanitarian emergency”. Faced with such a major socio-economic collapse, all areas of public policy have been affected: education is one of the hardest hit. The serious deterioration of the main indicators of educational coverage and quality led to the National Assembly declaring the education sector in an emergency condition in October 2018.
Education coverage: insufficient, unequal and exclusionary
According to data from the National Survey of Living Conditions (Encovi), for 2019 the school attendance rate of the population between 3 and 24 years old was seventy percent: three out of ten school-age people are outside the education system (UCAB, 2020). The school attendance rate is considered to be the best indicator of actual educational coverage, because it reflects how many people actually attend a school. Between 2014 and 2019, education coverage remained stagnant and showed a slightly decreasing trend.
