“El Castillo de la Mota” Spain.

After reading the book The Adventure of History volume N°151. I found the history of Castillo de la Mota very attractive and wanted to create a post to share with you.

It is located on the hill of the same name, in the province of Valladolid, Spain), under whose shadow were the first medieval markets in Medina del Campo.
It was probably created by the infanre Fernando de Antequerra around 1405.

It stands on a natural elevation of the terrain from which the whole environment dominates.

It originated in the repopulation of the 11th century, when the enclosure of the old town of 'la Mota' is fortified. The growth of the villa and the successive extensions of the walled enclosure would eventually turn it into a fortress independent of the villa itself.

In 1390 Juan I donated the villa and la Mota to his son Fernando de Antequera, the future king of Aragon. This caused constant clashes between the Castilian crown and the infants of Aragon over control of the fortress.

After the Battle of Olmedo in 1455, La Mota was definitely under royal power, performing military functions as well as archival and prison functions.
Henry IV ordered the construction of the tower in 1460 and handed the fortress to the Archbishop of Toledo, whose betrayal returns it to the Aragonese rule.

The Guisando Bullfighting Agreement in 1468 handed the fortress and the village to Isabel, but the king will take it away to give it to his daughter Juana, leaving the fortress in the hands of Alonso de Fonseca, supporter of the king, until his death in 1473.

The nephew of Alonso de Fonseca must reach an agreement with the Medinenses who wanted to take the fortress and deliver it to the Duke of Alba, who occupied it until 1475. From this date it is claimed and occupied by the crown.
