El Turpial Venezolano

El 23 de mayo de 1958, la Sociedad Venezolana de Ciencias, conformada por científicos y naturalistas, declara al Turpial, Ave Nacional de Venezuela,En Venezuela existen el turpial de agua, el turpial de huertos, muy abundante en la región del Lago de Maracaibo; el turpial cola amarilla, el turpial de Baltimore, que visita al Zulia en la zona árida de La Guajira en época de invierno boreal, y el turpial común, que es el Ave Nacional.
El Turpial está presente en casi todo el territorio nacional y se alimenta de insectos, frutas, huevos y hasta de aves más pequeñas. Es un ave territorial cuyo nombre científico es Icterus Icterus, que acostumbra a ocupar nidos abandonados y su época de apareamiento está entre marzo y septiembre,Esta ave cantora se distingue por tener un plumaje negro en su cabeza, parte del pecho y alas, el resto del cuerpo es un amarillo terroso, casi anaranjado, adornado con una fina línea blanca en sus alas. Su pico es coniforme, y la especie llega a medir entre 15 y 22 centímetros.
