Cayo Julius Caesar was born on July 13, 100 BC (according to the most commonly accepted date) in a not very aristocratic neighborhood of Rome, close to the current via Cavour. Little is known about his childhood, in the bosom of a patricia family, the gens Julia, who intended to descend from Aeneas (to whom he considered himself the son of Venus), and in which, at some point, a branch that added the name Caesar had been inserted. Family members had lived outside the ongoing struggle for the positions that allowed public careers to reach the consulate, the maximum aspiration.
It should be noted that it is not historically proven that Caesar's intention was to proclaim himself king; and, if he wanted to be, it cannot be known what kind of king, whether a rex in the Etruscan way, as Servius Tulio or Lucio Tarquinio Prisco, one similar to the Egyptian pharaoh or, simply, in the style of the Hellenic “Basileus”. The truth is that a weighted analysis of the facts, as they have come from sources, seems to indicate that he was thinking of establishing an autocratic regime of some kind, or at least they thought about it in the areas closest to it.
Pompeians, directed by Cneo Pompey, son of Pompey the Great, was suspicious, thinking about the possibility of an imminent assassination attempt. A demonstration of this is that in December of the year 45. C., on the eve of the Saturnales, went to spend a few days with Gayo Octavio's father-in-law (his grandnephew) in his residence near Puteoli (today Pozzuoli) and had him accompanied by an escort of 2000 men.
Cicero, whose villa adjacent to that of Lucio Marcio Filipo, had asked César to do him the honor of having dinner with him. The dictator accepted. The events of that night were recorded in a famous letter from Marco Tulio Cicero to Tito Pomponio Ático. According to Cicero, Caesar arrived at the village accompanied by the whole guard. Three special rooms received Caesar's entourage. Dinner was a big success. “As he [Caesar] had purged,” says Marco Tulio Cicero, “he drank and ate with as much appetite and energy”. César showed himself a brilliant and ingenious talkator. “On the other hand,” adds his host, “not a word of serious matters. Entirely literary conversation”. The next day, December 20, he left for Rome.
A group of conspirators intercepted Caesar just after passing to the Pompey Theatre, where the Roman curia was meeting, and led him to a room adjacent to the east portico, where they handed him the request. When the dictator began reading it, Tulio Cimber, who had given it to him, pulled his robe, causing César to rage Ista quidem vis est? “What kind of violence is this?” (it must not be forgotten that Caesar, having the sacrosantity of potestas tribunice, and, as Pontifex Maximus, was legally untouchable). At that time, the aforementioned Casca, pulling out a dagger, made a cut in his neck; the assaulted turned quickly and, nailing his writing punch into the arm of his aggressor, [h] said: “What are you doing, Casca, villain?”, because it was sacrilege to carry arms within the Senate meetings.
Casca, frightened, shouted in Greek.!, (adelphe, boethei! = «¡Socorro, hermanos!”), and, in response to that request, all launched on the dictator, including Marco Junio Brutus.[119] [120] Caesar then tried to leave the building for help, but blinded by blood, tripped and fell. The conspirators continued their aggression, while he lay helpless on the lower stairs of the portico. According to Eutropio and Suetonio, at least 60 senators participated in the assassination. Caesar received 23 stab wounds, of which, if we believe Suetonio, only one, the second one received in the thorax, was the mortal.
