#science Spanish scientists have managed to identify molecules that succeed in stopping the entry of coronavirus into cells, a discovery that could open the door to develop effective antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2 responsible for covid-19.
This has been achieved by researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), who have managed to identify different molecular compounds that prevent the entry of coronavirus into cells.
As CSIC explained in a press release released this Friday, these molecular compounds manage to inhibit the interaction that occurs between virus spicle protein and cell receptors.
These molecules act very early in the replicative cycle of the virus, so they could prevent overactivation of the immune system that ends up triggering the characteristic “cytokine storm” during the aggravation of covid-19.
The compounds identified as inhibitors of virus entry are molecules of the research group led by María Jesús Pérez Pérez, CSIC researcher at the Institute of Medical Chemistry (IQM-CSIC).
“Using the simile of the door, they seek to block the main door through which the virus accesses the cellular interior. In this way, they would protect cells from viral infection,” explained María Jesús Pérez, who leads the project together with Sonsoles Martín Santamaría, from the Margarita Salas Biological Research Center (CIB-CSIC), Ron Geller, from the Institute of Integrative and Systems Biology, a mixed center of the CSIC and the University of Valencia (east of Spain) and Alberto Marina and Vicente Rubio, of the Valencia Institute of Biomedicine (IBV-CSIC).
