#health Parkinson's is a disease caused by a multisystem neurodegenerative process that affects the central nervous system, which causes the appearance of motor and non-motor symptoms. It is chronic and affects each person who suffers from it differently, the evolution may be very slow in some patients and in others it may evolve more quickly. It is not a fatal disease, which means that the affected person will not die from Parkinson's.
The most common motor symptoms are tremor, stiffness, slow movement and postural instability, among others. In addition to motor disturbance, regions of the nervous system and neurotransmitters other than dopamine are also involved in the disease, adding various other symptoms to typical motor symptoms, known as non-motor symptoms. They often appear years earlier than motor symptoms, they are known as “premotor symptoms”. The best known are: depression, reduced smell, constipation and REM sleep behavior disorder (very vivid reveries).
Despite all the advances in neurology, today the etiology or cause of Parkinson's disease is unknown, so it is also unknown how to prevent it. It affects both men and women, and more than 70 percent of people diagnosed with Parkinson's are over 65 years of age. However, it is not exclusively a disease of the elderly, since 30 per cent of those diagnosed are under 65 years of age.
Symptoms
Tremors: Slow and rhythmic. They predominate while at rest and decrease when making a voluntary movement. They are not necessarily present by all patients.
Muscle stiffness: Resistance to limb movement, muscle hypertonia.
Bradykinesia: Slowness of voluntary and automatic movements. Lack of expression of the face. Slow and small writing (micrograph). Manipulative clumsiness.
Postural anomalies: Forward tilt of the trunk and head. Elbows and knees are like shrunken.
Walking anomalies: Slow walking, shuffling. Sometimes they take quick and short steps (festination), with difficulty standing. Blockage episodes (feet look like they're stuck to the ground).
Balance disorder: Altered reflexes, easy falls.
Sleep disorders: insomnia to catch the first sleep, very fragmented sleep at night, waking up too early and not falling asleep again, vivid nightmares, night cries, daytime sleepiness
