It is possible to break up the day into different time zones for specific purposes in this day and age. Usually, anything more minor, such as school or business, will offset the generic time zone. A similar practice is applied to many states, including California. If you enjoyed this article and would love to get more facts on California Time, read more!

So what time is it  in California?
As far as I know, each state in the U.S. calculates time following its respective longitude and latitude when it comes to geographical location. This is in contrast to most other countries globally, which calculate time-based on their respective Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

For Example, It's 5 p.m 1999 here in California, but in the state of Delaware, it was currently 8 p.m. on October 15th, 2015. When they travel to a different time zone, many people are unaware that there are drastic changes in the time that will affect the rest of their lives.

Confusion about time in California
When people travel to a different country, they might be confused about the time. In the United States, it is common for a state to fall into two different time zones. California is no exception.

There are two different times in California from east to west. The large metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Francisco are on Pacific Time, which is eight hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). However, most of the state observes the same time as the rest of the nation – Eastern Standard Time – five hours behind GMT.

The confusion lies in that some parts of California are on Pacific Time and others are on Eastern Standard Time. This map shows you which zone each county lies in. The dividing line lies right down the middle of Interstate 5.

Pacific Time
The Pacific Time Zone observes standard time by subtracting eight hours from Coordinated Universal Time. During daylight saving time, its time offset is UTC−7.
By itself, the term "Pacific Time" (or "PT") is used in international treaties and many national laws concerning civil rights and voting. In the United States and Canada, this time zone is generically called the "west coast" time zone.
The largest city in the Pacific Time Zone is Los Angeles; San Francisco, San Jose, and Sacramento are also significant cities.

Eastern Standard Time
The time zones in the United States are defined at the federal level by law. The states can also have their laws, which could define the time zones in a slightly different manner than the federal government. The Eastern Time Zone is defined as 4 hours behind UTC during the winter months (from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November) and 5 hours behind UTC during the summer months (from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October).
