Walking around the ENCI - quarry in Limburg

70 million years back in time

In Limburg (NL) there are places where you can look into Pre-history! The deep quarries where more than 100 years of marl has been excavated show the layers of history very nicely. We went hiking in the ENCI - quarry near Maastricht.

No marl won in the ENCI quarry since 2019. The loosened vowels were ground to cement on the spot until that time. The area is currently being developed into a nature reserve (Natural Monuments).

You can walk around the quarry, and you can walk around the higher part of the quarry itself.

We walked the long route (eventually 9 km) above the quarry. Here and there you have beautiful vantage points where you can oversee the entire quarry. But even if you are less on your feet, you can walk directly into the quarry from the parking lot near the Chalet d'n Obeservant via a bland descending path.

From the view plateau (On the Luikerweg) you have an amazing view! If you're afraid of heights, you'll have to take a deep breath if you want to defy it. Luckily, you also have a nice view if you stay next to it.

Through a staircase you can enter the quarry 40 metres deep. You can also walk up the top.

You can also see layers of Flint between the Limestone layers. The tools were made of this in the Stone Age. Razor-sharp and very hard.

natuur

At the highest cliffs, you really go back 70 million years in time in 95 metres. Remains of mosasaurias have been found there.

Marl mining has left a huge hole where a beautiful nature is popping up.

Many different plants develop very well in the area, but more and more animals find their spot there, such as the oehoe, the ring hose, the backstrip and special butterflies.

natuur

Huge corridor systems are located in and under the St. Pietersberg. An excursion allows you to go through and hear the stories of the function, such as shelters in World War II. This is still on my list of what I would like to do again. This time we didn't have time to do that.

natuur

The water in the quarry has a very special blue-green colour due to the limestone. So special that it feels very unDutch. Unfortunately, we had bad weather with fog and thick clouds. With sun, it is even more beautiful, because the blue sky reflects and creates beautiful shadows and contrasts in all layers. Also nicer for the pictures.

natuur

A lot of things can be found walking along the high walls. @Tess crafts and more found a lead bullet and @peerke70 found some pretty fossils.

It is a very nice place in autumn too. The beautiful colours create really beautiful pictures. Although there would have been a bit of sunshine here.

All in all an absolute must when you are in Limburg. Whether you love Nature, Photography, Industry, Urban, Ancient History or newer history, you can find it all in the NCSI quarry.
