Want to visit Positano, Italy - but not sure how to get there? Positano is a favorite town along the Amalfi coast with jet-setters, honeymooners and fans of luxury tourism.
But it can be challenging to arrive as there is no direct train service to the city.
Here are a few suggestions on how to get to Positano.
By plane from Naples:
The nearest airport is Naples International Airport. From there, you have a few options.
You can hire an independent driver to pick you up at the airport and take you directly to your hotel in Positano. This is one of the simplest, least stressful ways to do things. But it is also very expensive. It will cost you about 120 Euros one way.
You can also rent a car and drive it yourself. With good GPS (which you can find in a car rental service), this should not be too difficult as there is only one highway to Positano. It will take you about 1.25 hours depending on the traffic.
The next option you have is to take a bus service (outside the airport area) to Sorrento. From Sorrento you can take another city bus that will take you to Posano.
This is one of the cheapest ways to get there. On the downside, however, you will also carry your own load - so it may bother you.
Another way to travel from Naples airport is to take a ferry to the port of Naples and take one of the ferries / hydrofoil services to Sorrento. From there, you can take the city bus to Posano.
(Sometimes you can get a boat to take you to Positano from the port of Naples if you get lucky in your time - but do not rely on it as there are not many direct hydrofoils working).
Doing so is very affordable - and you get to see the Amalfi coast in the water. Too bad you are carrying your own burdens.
Response from Rome:
You can get to Portugal from the Roman airport by a few of the same routes.
There is also a private driver option. However this will be a very long time (about 4 hours) and it will be a very expensive option (300 - 400 Euros one way).
You can also take a taxi from Rome airport to Rome train station and take a train to Sorrento. From there you can take the SITA bus to Positano.
Another option is to take the train to Salerno and from Salerno take a ferry to Positano.
Arriving by boat is a great way to see the Amalfi coast - however one thing to consider is that when you come by boat, you will still have to pack your bags and go to your hotel (which may mean climbing several stairs. If your hotel is up the hill).
The best way to get around this is to drive your hotel in advance early and arrange for a good carrier to meet you at the stop and pick up your bags. It will save you a lot of pain and suffering!
