Summer in France - day 17: mountain hike 'les carnets d'Archiane'

It is still quite fresh when we display our breakfast on the table outside. The sun puts the mountains behind the valley full of vineyards into the light, making the morning view beautiful. (Photo taken below from our breakfast table on the terrace.)

After breakfast we will explore our new environment. You only hear the sounds of nature, otherwise it's deafening quiet. The view in the street continues to amaze us.

After lunch we drive for an hour in the direction of the mountains. There is a spicy mountain walk on our agenda. We drive to the hamlet of Archiane, south of the Vercors massif. The walk is only 5 km long, but you can count on 2h30 because of the differences in altitude.

We leave our car in the designated parking lot, just in front of the hamlet. As a non-villager, you are not allowed to enter the built-up core with the wagon. The walk is pretty well marked, if you know what to follow. A sign shows the whole route, with the marked points.

Along the hiking trail there are poles with signposts, where both distance and estimated time are indicated.

The hike starts on a fairly wide path with slight differences in altitude, but soon it becomes a big calf biter over rocks and a small road full of boulders.

Around the bare peaks of the limestone cliffs you can spot four kinds of vultures. We see at least ten of them circling during our trip. (see also header photo)

Most of the vultures you see circling here have a wingspan of about three meters.

There is an information board on the 'belvedere' where you can read where they are at the moment in their development.

Butterflies dance along you, along the path and in the plants along the road.

Another sign, along the way, warns us of the dogs that protect herds of sheep from wolves and lynxes. I don't want to run into any of them, and I don't.

The estimated time of 2h30 is also true. Then you really have time to look around and discover the vultures above your head. But especially the impressive nature around you is worth it.
