“Euthanasia is an act of love”: 'Doctor death'

His name is Jairo Quintana and has performed more than 300 assisted deaths .

The aid to the good die and was a pioneer in practice, for 35 years long before the approval of euthanasia by the Constitutional Court with a presentation by Judge Carlos Gaviria in 1997 that opened the way to decriminalization and regulation of the sentence with a decision signed by the Minister of Health Alejandro Gaviria in april 2015.

Dr Quintana along with a group of doctors and lawyers have the Association Right to die worthily so that anyone who is a terminal patient, as long as he is in complete lucidity and can decide on his end.

It is important to clarify that, despite the fact that the first legal procedure of this kind in Colombia took place in 2015, which by means of a means of guardianship, was issued judgment C-239 of 1997, and there are regulations to accede to this procedure.

What is said by the Congress of the Republic, which currently has a bill aimed at regulating the exercise of the right to dignified death:
“Although it is a fundamental right, today there are many obstacles to accessing the right to die worthily through euthanasia. There is no law that specifically regulates this right”

“In practice the intervention of the Legislature is not necessary. Euthanasia is a fundamental right recognized by the Constitutional Court and has regulations of the Ministry of Health, which had issued three resolutions that are in force on the subject”

Under what legal parameters can the euthanasia procedure be carried out in Colombia?

To access the procedure, it is necessary to meet at least four requirements:

Having a disease in a terminal state
Consider that life has ceased to be worthy product of the disease
To express consent in a clear, informed, complete and precise manner
In addition, aid to die must be provided by a medical professional, preferably with the authorization of the scientific-interdisciplinary committee.
