Every caterpillar ever becomes a butterfly... doesn't it?
I always thought every caterpillar ever turns into a beautiful butterfly.
But you have caterpillars and.. bastard drups !
Now take the caterpillars I discovered yesterday on my white rose bushes.
( Or what's left of it, because some twigs are already pretty bald. )
I was very curious what kind of beauty would come out of that, so I threw my pictures into a nature group, where there are lots of connoisseurs and nature guides.
Almost immediately I got an answer: 'This will never be a butterfly!'
De rupsen blijken zogenaamde bastard drups te zijn.
It is the larvae of the rose sawfly..
In spring, the rose sawfly makes a small slice in a rose leaf.
She puts her eggs in and sprays a chemical substance into the rose leaf.
This causes the leaf to curl up, protecting the eggs from enemies.
After a while, the larvae hatch, which are full of the green leaves of the bush.
( That's what they're doing right now! )
