“Every farmer is basically a carbon farmer. “
The #CO2 emissions in the Netherlands should be significantly reduced. So-called #koolstofboeren can help by planting their fields even in winter, allowing the #CO2 in crops and the soil is stored. KIJK spoke with Roel Clement, project leader of the Carbon Farming project that recently started.
What is a carbon farmer?
In principle, every farmer is a carbon farmer misses he works in a certain way. Farmers do this by, for example, not leaving their fields fallow in the winter, but also growing up plants such as green manure (clover species, graces — ed.).
These plants take #koolstofdioxide on. By ploughing them over time, a farmer can store the bound CO2 in the ground for a long time.
Can all farmers #koolstofboer be?
“Every farmer is able to store more CO2 in his soil by adding more to that soil than by means of harvesting products. He must put time and money in that. The question is whether every farmer wants that if there is no reward for this.”
Why does the Netherlands have so little #koolstofboeren - What?
“This is because there is insufficient incentive for farmers to get started with it. Currently, there are many large companies, such as airlines, which have their #klimaatuitstoot compensate through projects abroad. Why do they not invest in farmers, so that they can make extra efforts to store more CO2 in the soil? An additional advantage is that the soil due to more carbon #klimaat -is more resistant to extreme weather, such as this year's summer heat (2018), because more water is retained in it.”
