False Memories

"When I was little, my brother told me that an alligator had eaten a kid who lived in our house before we moved there. We lived in Florida, and there was swamp at the end of our street - we could hear the alligators all the time, and could see them come up into the road. My brother was always telling us scary things, and as I got older, I put it into the same mental category as “the people who lived in the house with the brick fence have a monkey in a cage, and it bites anyone who comes in,” or “when I was doing my paper route at 3am, I saw a man wearing a dress skipping down the middle of the street.” Both of these things could have been true, but probably weren’t. That was my brother’s superpower - telling plausible lies about weird things. And then decades later, I told my mother about the story my brother had told me and she said “Oh, that’s true. That kid would poke the alligators with sticks, and one day, one of the alligators killed him."
