Fifty shades of green... Our trip through Iceland, day 7: Ásbyrgi, Hljódaklettar and Raudholar.
This day we started driving from Husavik.
Our first goal was to see if we could find Puffins (Puffins), at our familiar spot, half an hour's drive from Husavik, but the animals turned out to be fishing en masse at sea. We knew it was a gamble, Puffins are at sea almost all year, and in early August, the breeding season ends and they leave again.
We therefore decided to continue to Ásbyrgi, located in North Iceland on road 864.
Ásbyrgi (Also called shelter of the Gods) is a horseshoe-shaped canyon, which is said to have been created because Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse, took the text “leave nothing but footprints” quite literally: in Norse mythology, a story is known that the canyon is the hoof print of Sleipnir would be.
Ásbyrgi is also called the capital of the hidden people (Iceland has many stories of hidden people, like elves and trolls).
