This Sunday, the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida dawned dressed in white.

Mérida surprised its inhabitants with its snow-covered peaks, the highest mountains in the Andean state were frozen at their tips.

After a heavy and prolonged rain that fell on the city of Mérida and other areas of the state, in the early hours of this Sunday, March 13, the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada dawned covered in white, a fact that for almost a decade only occurs when it snows heavily, due to the climate change that has resulted in the glacier retreat in Venezuela.

The Bolívar, El Toro, El León and La Concha peaks are snowy this Sunday morning from different sectors of Mérida.

This is the first big snowfall of 2022 in Mérida. Last year, the first snowfall seen from the Andean city fell on January 8, a time when the lowest temperatures are generally recorded in the state.

This Sunday's snowfall is not usual at this time. The snowy season is usually between June and September.

It is worth mentioning that snowfalls are a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in areas with an altitude above 3,800 meters above sea level (masl), although they are strongest above 4,200 meters above sea level (masl). The peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida are higher, reaching 4,978 meters above sea level, which is the height of Pico Bolivar, the highest in Venezuela.
