Not only in America, but also in the Netherlands, the meat industry is struggling with over production. In the Netherlands, a frozen reservoir of veal is building up. The calf sector already had an image problem and now this form of livestock farming is hit unprecedented by the collapsed market because of corona. The Blom family started last year could not have imagined a worse start. “Crisis until 2023?” Well, we're not going to sustain that.”

Food in US destroyed, but demand food banks explodes.
The United States has been in an unprecedented situation because of the corona-crisis. In addition to a health crisis, an economic crisis and an oil crisis, the following problem is on the doorstep: a food crisis.
In America, farmers destroy their crops, livestock farmers massively dump their milk and have to kill animals. They can't lose their products. Meanwhile, there are large shortages in the food banks.

Meat processing companies in particular have been hit hard. In the factories where people are close to each other, hundreds of workers have fallen ill. Several factories have had to close their doors. The consequences of this are great. It causes a domino effect throughout the food chain.

“We do our best to find room for all pigs. But at some point, if we can't market the pigs anymore, we have to think of something. We just don't have enough room to house all the animals. We are now considering clearing them”, says pig farmer Mike Patterson. He won't lose his cattle anymore, now that many factories have closed their doors.
