Colombia is working on adopting sustainability practices to transform its food industry, something that the country has been developing along the entire production chain.
A good example of this work is a project called 'Biocarbono Orinoquía - low carbon sustainable landscapes', an initiative of the National Government, supported by the World Bank, which seeks to identify and develop alternatives to improve agricultural production, thus ensuring the reduction of Greenhouse Gases. This is implemented in the departments of Arauca, Casanare, Meta and Vichada and thus accompanies companies in the sector to develop an integration that includes primary production. In addition to this, they are working on actions for the management of effluents derived from the food transformation process and to prioritize the use of alternative energies, within the framework of the concept of sustainable livestock farming.
Further along the production chain, there are companies such as Alianza Team, which with its Manos Verdes program seeks to close the cycle of used vegetable oil (AVU) in establishments in the hotel, restaurant and cafeteria sector and guarantees its proper disposal.
In the area of nutrition, companies such as Colanta have been working on the innovation of functional foods that, in addition to their nutritional contribution, offer beneficial health effects, a priority issue in the current situation.
Vida yogurt also contains beta-glucans obtained biotechnologically from Ganoderma lucidum, a fungus that, according to scientific research, strengthens the immune system.
It has been proven that beta-glucans can help increase the body's defense capacity against viruses and bacteria, prevent the appearance of malignant cells or tumors, facilitate recovery from side effects (before, during and after) chemotherapy and radiotherapy, reduce allergies and respiratory discomfort, and have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits", the company assures.
Faced with the problem of food waste, the country has the Association of Food Banks of Colombia, ABACO. It is a network of 22 banks that rescues surplus food from the agricultural, industrial, commercial and hotel sectors, restaurants and individuals, which is then redistributed to vulnerable populations.
Every year we prevent 25,000 tons of food fit for human consumption from being thrown away. We combat food insecurity in the country by managing donations with a view to strengthening healthy nutrition, as mentioned by this organization.

Sostenibilidad alimentaria en Colombia
Colombia trabaja en adoptar prácticas de sostenibilidad que permitan transformar su industria de alimentos, es algo que este país viene desarrollando a lo largo de toda la cadena de producción.
Un buen ejemplo de este trabajo es que el viene realizando un proyecto que tiene por nombre Biocarbono Orinoquía – paisajes sostenibles bajos en carbono´, una iniciativa del Gobierno Nacional, que cuenta con el apoyo del Banco Mundial y que busca identificar y desarrollar alternativas para mejorar la producción agropecuaria, así garantizan la disminución de Gases Efecto Invernadero.
Esto se implementada en los departamentos de Arauca, Casanare, Meta y Vichada y así acompaña a las empresas del sector a desarrollar una integración que contempla producción primaria.
Adicional a esto trabajan en acciones para el manejo de efluentes derivados del proceso de transformación de alimentos y para priorizar el uso de energías alternativas, en el marco del concepto de ganadería sostenible.
Así más adelante en la cadena de producción, hay empresas como Alianza Team que con su programa Manos Verdes busca cerrar el ciclo del aceite vegetal usado (AVU) en establecimientos del sector de hoteles, restaurantes y cafeterías y garantiza su adecuada disposición.
En materia de nutrición, compañías como Colanta vienen trabajando en la innovación de alimentos funcionales que, además de su aporte nutricional, ofrecen efectos benéficos para la salud, un tema prioritario en medio de la actual coyuntura.
Así mismo el yogurt Vida contiene betaglucanos obtenidos biotecnológicamente a partir de Ganoderma lucidum, un hongo que, de acuerdo con investigaciones científicas, fortalece el sistema inmunológico
Se ha comprobado que los betaglucanos pueden ayudar aumentar la capacidad de defensa del cuerpo contra virus y bacterias, prevenir la aparición de células o tumores malignos, facilitar la recuperación de efectos colaterales (antes, durante y después) de la quimioterapia y radioterapia, y disminuir alergias y molestias respiratorias y tiene beneficios antiinflamatorios y antioxidantes”, asegura la compañía.
Frente a la problemática del desperdicio de alimentos, el país cuenta con la Asociación de Bancos de Alimentos de Colombia, ABACO. Es una red de 22 bancos que rescata los excedentes alimentarios del sector agropecuario, industrial, comercial, hotelero, restaurantes y personas naturales, que luego son redistribuidos a población en situación de vulnerabilidad.
Cada año evitamos que se tiren a la basura 25.000 toneladas de comida apta para el consumo humano. Combatimos la inseguridad alimentaria del país gestionando donaciones con miras a fortalecer una nutrición saludable, según lo menciona está organización.
