Meppel can be reached via water for ships up to 3000 tonnes and is located on the main waterways network. Meppel is connected to Zwartsluis via the Meppelerdiep and then the IJsselmeer. Meppel also gives access to the Drentsche Hoofdvaart. On the Meppelerdiep ships with a maximum size of 110 x 11.50 x 3.25 meters (at NAP) can arrive. Beyond the Cape Bridges, the maximum allowable size decreases to 90 x 9.50 x 2.50 m at NAP. There are several shipyards in Meppel, both for commercial and pleasure boating. There are also several storage and transhipment companies with their own unloading docks, including a container terminal that lowers approximately 27,500 containers per year.

Every year in June there is the famous Canal Festival and that attracts many people and pleasure boats to Meppel: even from England/London!
