DS confirmed it would be joining forces not only with Penske Autosport to form a DS Penske Formula E team, but that two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne and defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne would be racing for the team in 2023. One last note related to Formula E is the announcement from Mercedes-Benz that they are leaving Europes DTM Championship to join 2017s Electric Car Racing Series for 2019-20. The German giants, Mercedes, Audi, and BMW, are leaving Formula E, and while this does not necessarily cause a crisis, as privateer teams and the new factory entry of Maserati will step into the void, it does make a major change. DS Automobiles, Jaguar, Mahindra Racing, Maserati, NIO 333, Nissan and Porsche AG are all locked into Formula E Gen3, while the giant German marques Mercedes, BMW and Audi are all leaving the series at the end of the current season.
Six Manufacturers
So far, seven manufacturers have committed to Formula E; that is seven manufacturers. Six current manufacturers will transition into Generation III cars, and Italian manufacturer Maserati joins Formula E for the first time. From the beginning of the 2015-16 Formula E season, eight manufacturers will enter the series, redesigning and building their own power units for the SRT_01E. From the 2015/2016 Season, Formula E will be a non-title-based league, which allows manufacturers to implement their own internal innovations, starting with development of custom-built power units.
