Formula E has really come a long way from the very first season, and from that very first race in Olympic Park, Beijing. Despite being a global race series, officially sanctioned by the FIA as the world championship, Formula E is still looking for its Formula E place on the sporting landscape. When the ABB FIA Formula E Open Wheeler World Championship, an all-electric, street-legal car, took to the road course for its inaugural race in 2014, Beijing, China, the series had some of that "what am I watching" appeal.

Nissan

Nissan made its debut all-electric race at ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season 5 (2018/19), becoming the first and only Japanese manufacturer to join the series, and competing alongside race team E.dams as Nissan e.dam. In their inaugural season, Nissan e.dams finished fourth in the ABB Formula E Teams World Championship, scoring six podiums and five pole positions. In April 2022, Nissan acquired e.dams racing team, and Nissan took full ownership of its participation in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

DS

French luxury automobile brand DS Automobiles is teaming up with Penske Autosport, the Formula E team founded by Roger Penskes son, Jay Penske Formula E, for the 2023 ABB Formula E World Championship. DS confirmed it would not only team with Penske Autosport to form a DS Penske Formula E team, but that two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne and defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne would be racing for the team in 2023. Penske Autosport will field entries from reigning Formula E champion Stoffel Vandoorne, who won his title with the works Mercedes squad, and returning DS driver Jean-Eric Vergne -- the series double champion -- for Formula Es ninth season.

Techeetah

Techeetah, a multiple-time Formula E champion, will not compete in 2023, but key figures are looking to build a package for a return in 2024. The Race understands that Techeetah has been talking with a number of undisclosed manufacturers regarding a 2024 racing agreement, having used 2023 to rebuild the team after most of its staff left to join new partner DS Penske. The Race has learned the team is certainly not competing in Formula Es next Gen3-first season. Several teams -- Mahindra, Venturi, Andretti, for example -- also remain active in Formula E after Season 1.

Formula E cars

During Season 1, a school series of Formula E cars, designed by student teams developing their own electric cars, was run at selected events as supporting races. Within three years, a single team had launched Formula E. From the 2020-21 season, Formula E is a World Championship sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de lAutomobile (FIA), making it the first series in the world of sports car racing other than Formula One to receive World Championship status. As of the seventh season, Formula E championship has been granted world championship status by the FIA, as it has met the criteria of having four manufacturers competing, and having races across three continents, as of the 2015-16 season.

Nelson Piquet

Formula E was decided by the final race in London, with Nelson Piquet Jr. becoming the inaugural Formula E champion, just one point ahead of Sebastien Buemi. Lucas di Grassi won Formula E at the final race of the season, 24 points ahead of Sebastien Buemi, 54 points ahead of the third-placed rookie driver Felix Rosenqvist. After the inaugural race in New York, Jean-Eric Vergne won his second Formula E title, becoming the first driver to win more than one title, as well as the back-to-back title. The teams championship was decided in the second-to-last race, with E.dams Renault (232 points) winning, ahead of Dragon Racing (171 points), which had overtaken ABT for the last Formula E round.

E prix

I recently attended an E-Prix race in Brooklyn, alongside Envision Racing, and I came away aware of the team-critical nature of Formula E. Formula E racing success is contingent upon a highly efficient team -- and lessons learned from highly efficient teams across a range of sports, where results are immediate, immediate, critical, and deliver value for groups under any circumstances. These lessons can translate from the global venues in which Formula E races to the international offices of modern corporate organizations. Formula E teams are hybrid, diverse, and global, working in high velocity, on the move (between races and in-between races), and have self-imposed constraints on resources.

F One Racing

Like Formula One racing, Formula E is motorsport, featuring fast, stylish, though battery-powered, racing cars. While Formula E in Generation 3 will not be pushing the envelope quite like commercial vehicle fleets due to the range of their batteries, the series promises faster-moving race cars. Despite electric cars making dramatic gains in range over the last five years, do not expect big jumps in Formula Es racecar fleet for next year.

Analytics

Advanced analytics allow Formula E drivers to learn from each lap, spot areas for improvement and refine race strategies. Races are often won and lost in a matter of seconds, making data analysis a crucial component of Formula E. Drivers spend hours in simulators before each race. Fan engagement is another key metric for success in Formula E. In future, Envision Racing will be using AI to provide teams with deeper insight into the overall Formula E fan universe with its upcoming Fan 360 project.

Jamie Reigle

Only one driver explained Formula E is just like every other racing series right now, if you take into account teams who come and go, as well as the ones who might return. New Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle noted last year he was keen to do away with FanBoost, with The Race noting the decision to abolish it was unanimous among teams and promoters, and was part of the discussions going on regarding race formats for Season 9.
