Gifted children

#kids Having a gifted child at home could be a challenge for some parents, however, early guidance and diagnosis could be very helpful in exploiting and developing these skills correctly.

Gifted children are not always detected by the education system or by psychology or psychopedagogy specialists, and even less do they receive the attention they need to stimulate and boost their potential. If they are also girls or come from social sectors with poverty rates, they are even more difficult to identify.

There are also many myths and false beliefs surrounding this condition that make them go unnoticed, invisible or, worse still, diagnosed with disorders they don't have, such as attention deficit (with or without hyperactivity), bipolar disorder or Asperger's syndrome.

Most specialists agree that to know if a child is gifted, you have to wait until they reach the age of 5 or 6. However, there are also those who consider that it is possible to detect some early signs of high capacity between the ages of 2 and 4.

The main characteristics of a gifted child are often misunderstood. For clinical psychologist Linda Kreger Silverman, founder of the Gifted Development Center in Denver, United States, gifted children have qualities such as:

1. They give very intelligent (and very convincing) explanations for not doing homework or not wanting to go to school.

2. a high ability to create witty stories or jokes, or word games.

3. They ask and requestion with ingenuity, putting their parents or teachers in trouble.

4. They show a conscientious dedication to an activity they are passionate about.

5. They do usual things in an unusual way.

6. They are aware of what is unjust and the courage to defend the defenseless.

7 They are able to remain calm in times of chaos.

Do you suspect that any nephew, grandson or family member manifests several of these signs? do not be alarmed, it could be high capacities or not, this could be determined under an environment of observation during the classroom.
