Gold grain airport

On December 19, 1929, the president of the state Zulia, General Vincencio Pérez Soto, inaugurated the primitive Grano de Oro Airport in Maracaibo, the first air terminal built in Zulia.
The land was acquired by the regional government with an area of one million square meters located in the La Macandona sector of the municipality Chiquinquirá, owned by Mr. José Oliva, and at the time of the purchase it was the heritage of José María Camarillo.
The name of the airport comes from the same place as its location, because right there was the famous Hato Grano de Oro.
The Airport “Grano de Oro”, was built to form me between 1930 and 1944, served the city of Maracaibo, Zulia state, until 1969, at which time the Caujarito Airport was put into service.
This new airport named “La Chinita” International Airport, named after the patron saint Zuliana, was built in 1964, to place it outside the urban context, since the Golden Grain was surrounded by dwellings on its four sides, which prevented the extension of the tracks, (the only runway in service of the existing 4, was 2 km long, sufficient for piston propeller and turboprop aircraft, but daily jet aircraft type DC-9-14 and Boeing 727-100 capable of taking off from short runways).
Unfortunately a few months before the commissioning of the new airport, on 16 March 1969, when taking off from the Grano de Oro Airport, Viasa Flight 742 between Ziruma neighborhood and La Trinidad urbanization was rushed ashore, 115 people died in the accident..
At present these grounds are used by the University of Zulia (LUZ), where the faculty of sciences is located. In addition there are several facilities such as the fire brigade of LUZ the Expo Zulia exhibition complex and even a mechanical park

Unfortunately today that area of the city is very neglected, I also remember that there was the famous chinita fair with the pallets of the brewing companies of the country.
