During the 19th century and before the Dictatorial Government of Antonio Guzmán Blanco, coins from several countries were circulating in Venezuela. Colombian pesos and US dollars were quite common to do all kinds of buying and selling business, also merchants worked with the barter of goods, all this because Venezuela did not have an official currency. It is in this period that the circulation of one of the most famous coins begins: the American Morocota. The Morocota was a gold coin worth 20 dollars. It was a coin made under the following standards: its alloy was 90% gold with 10% copper, giving a purity of 21.6 carats; its pure gold content was 0.9675 troy ounces (equivalent to 30,0892 grams of pure gold). The story tells that the name of Morocota was awarded by General José Tadeo Monagas in 1849 because he saw a certain similarity between the round of the coin and a river fish called “Morocoto. “Subsequently and during the Guzmán Blanco government, a single currency in the country is formalized to improve and facilitate purchase transactions and sale and exchange of money in the country. Once “El Bolívar” was established as the official currency in Venezuela, the currency of 100 bolívares began to be called Morocota as its characteristics were similar to the American Morocota. Also this Venezuelan currency was called “Pachano” referring to the one that was currently director of the Central Bank of Venezuela, Dr. Jacinto Pachano. Morocota was a pretty coveted coin given what it was worth and also because of its weight in gold. So much was the influence of it that even today in history books is still remembered. #Lasmorocotas
