Talking about new beginnings, the gang had gathered at Kristen's a few nights later, on New Year's Eve, to celebrate together. Soon January was going to come and with that - the Sundance Festival and the premiere of "Come Swim" - Kristen's first directed movie. For her, it had been a long journey to finally reach and accomplish her goal. She could imagine people praising her and accepting her movie.
The gang had sat in a circle in the living area, close to the fireplace as if they wanted the fire to wrap them in a blanket, to let them feel the comfort and the warmth of Kristen's home. The house has gone through a major renovation that summer and autumn, seeing that Kristen had been working and travelling so much, almost never being home, she thought that it would be the perfect time to change it completely. The once college-dormitory vibes were gone and replaced with more domestic ones. Still, some rooms were empty, reserved for special little ones.
Everybody had snuggled all together to warm themselves up. It was unusually cold for LA. The whole group were heat lovers, having grown up in the city, some of them - in the same neighbourhood as Kristen.
"So," Alicia arose from her seat, looking at Kristen, and some of the others followed her. "A birdie told me that you met a hottie at the gym," she raised an eyebrow cockily and smirked.
Everyone was staring at Kristen, waiting for to satisfy their needs for gossiping.
"Well," She was looking at her lap shyly and playing with the string of her tracksuit. The gang had never seen her that shy. There truly had to be a new man or a woman in her life.
"His name is Everett."
Her friends were pop-eyed. So it was a man and not a woman? After all of this time dating women, they had assumed she didn't want to have anything in common with men, let alone date them.
The girls got so pumped that they began squealing and insisted on knowing everything about him. Kristen, chuckling at their excitement, shoved the phone in their faces, on the display a photo of Everett she had taken a while ago.
Only Alicia appeared to not like him at first glance. Her reason for that was stupid, according to Kristen. And rather racist. New Year's Eve was not the time for being racist.
The actress bit her tongue from arguing with her ex-girlfriend and just said:
"Yes, he's African American. Is there something wrong with that?"
Alicia was taken aback by her friend's sudden outburst. "No, it's just . . . Something new."
Despite being honest with her friends about Everett, Kristen couldn't help but feel slightly offended at Alicia for her assumed dislike towards Everett. And Robert's next letter hadn't helped her ease the pain.
She was sick of those confused feelings, from all the words written with hatred on the tear-strained pages of his diary. When was it all going to end?
