The difference between a peppernut and a spice nut

Although peppernuts and peppernuts are often put together, they are actually two very different treats with their own story.

The peppernut is a traditional candy that is reminiscent of soft pieces of gingerbread. Made from rye flour and sweetened with honey, it has a slight anise flavor and a chewy, chewy texture. The irregular, crumbly shape gives it an artisanal character and is reminiscent of the old-fashioned recipes from grandmother's kitchen.

The spice nut, on the other hand, is a real crunchy delicacy. These half scoops of speculoos, made from wheat flour, are flavoured with a mix of gingerbread spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, cardamom, ginger and a hint of white pepper. This gives the spice nut its characteristic spicy and warming taste, perfect for the cold days of December.

Although people often use the term “peppernuts” to refer to both varieties, the differences are clear when you taste them. Peppernuts are soft and chewy; peppernuts are crisp and brittle. However, both have one thing in common: they bring the smell and taste of the Sinterklaas party.
