Born with the hat

Whoever says Jan de Vries says Jan with the hat. As soon as he opens the door - if only because there was a call - Jan invariably puts on his cap. When he shows his childhood pictures to friends and acquaintances, everyone notices that he has his inseparable cap on. And if he doesn't wear a cap once, because he's inside, you'll see the print of his cap in his head of hair. Everyone assumes that Jan was born with the hat.

He has, of course, had several caps over the course of his life. After 70 years, that makes perfect sense. A special cap is central to this speech. It's the cap that he got — or actually won — from his grandson Jochem.
