As I find myself getting closer and closer to the 50-year mark, I think it’s time for me to start thinking more about healthy snacks. As the sign of the century (the boy who sounds bad) approaches, the situation may seem bleak but when I tell you the truth, I feel terrified!
However, I know that although I still feel good about myself and currently enjoy good health, the habits of the past years may come back to haunt me physically. If I do not take steps now to prevent future health problems it will be my biggest mistake. After all, I am the only one who controls what I put in my mouth to eat.
Over the years I have not developed good eating habits. I was on the road with a lot of work and more than once I ate a few king-like candy in the gas station instead of planning a meal or taking the time to find another healthy way.
Now that I am older and more intelligent (however, older, still more intelligent) I am trying to make the best choice of nutritious food. I prefer healthy snacks instead of sugary quick fixes.
This change is not easy. I have found that like most people, I am addicted to sugar. When I said I was sugar. If you have ever tried to free yourself from using or consuming sugar I am sure you found it difficult. It's hard to stop the cold turkey.
I learned somewhere that when your body craves those sugary sweets that the thing you really want is natural sugar. Natural sugars can be found in natural foods such as fruits.
Fruit is my secret weapon against my sweet tooth. I have to admit that oranges or bananas are not the same as a cup of peanut butter and although they are not very sweet they help to curb the craving for sugar.
As time goes by and you stop eating refined sugar, food sources that contain natural sugar will seem more appealing to you than ever before. Once you reach this point I will try to add a whole grain bar to your healthy food reserve. Be careful though to make sure you read the ingredients. Kashi has a good variety of tasting bars.
These whole grain bars will not raise your blood sugar levels and will not leave you tired after one hour as sugar candy does. They are also a good source of protein and fiber. Just make sure you read the label. And you are responsible for what you eat and not the marketing companies that try to sell all the horrible products out there. Take the time to be a smart and knowledgeable consumer.
