
I was given the opportunity by my client to work with a photographer who specializes in healthy foods photography. At first, I thought the few days we had planned together would be miserable. I was wrong when I found myself fascinated by how difficult it is to make food look good enough to get a consumer to buy it and what a difference it can make for a quality image in providing a mouth watering spectacle.
My visit was to Cooke Studio, hosted by commercial photographer Colin Cooke, who specializes in food photography. Interested people can find a series of commercial, editing, and still life portfolios available on the website to get a typical sample of studio work. It really takes talent to be a commercial photographer, but even more so to make food photos look so beautiful. Cooke Studio has had high profile clients such as Häagen-Daas, Dove, Healthy Choice, Ecco Domani, Dannon, and Renaissance.
As a commercial photographer, Colin Cooke was required to use standard commercial tools - lighting, angles, real and digital enhancements that every commercial photographer should know. Photography for food is like photography for a living, except that the commercial photographer has two goals: the first is to make each final product a work of art. The second is to sell something. By photographing food, this means that the commercial photographer should make the food look as edible and mouth-watering as possible. Of course, in this example, food photography is different from most other commercial photography because your studies often go wrong. As a result, the photographer at the grocery store should take a good photo immediately or have a lot of merchandise on hand. Or a professional food photographer can get into his trick bag.
One of the tricks within a food image, in addition to the usual photo tools, involves using a brush to distribute vegetable oil or glycerin on a commercial product to brighten it up. Some commercial photographers in the food industry make steam out of hot foods - one way is to heat water cotton balls in the microwave and place hot cotton balls in the back of a bowl or plate. Sometimes whipped ice cream is not at all ice cream, but the processed potatoes are colored to give that freshly melted look that will not melt. Instead of whipped cream, a shaving cream is used. For any type of liquid shooting, such as pouring liquid on ripples, some commercial photographers will use a thick, light substance that can be easily photographed. Meat in meat dishes is usually lightly cooked to prevent it from overflowing and shrinking - instead, it stays full. PVA usually replaces milk thistle because soggy cereal does not look good. The ice cubes you see in food advertising are usually small plastic bags sprayed on the trunk. Even the fruit gets a star treatment - some food photographers enhance the strawberry color with lipstick.
