Rather than sleeping the majority of the day away, as she did only a few months ago, your cheerful, curious 8-month-old is likely staying awake for considerably longer spans of time throughout the day and sleeping for longer at night. However, she must still get plenty of sleep overall; else, she will become overtired and irritable.
While no single nap and bedtime regimen is ideal for every infant, the majority of 8-month-olds have quite comparable sleep requirements in general. Sleep interruptions can also occur throughout the 8- to 10-month period, even in typically sound sleepers.
So, what type of sleep pattern is optimal for an 8-month-old, and what should you do if an asleep disturbance throws her routine off track? Everything you need to know is included below.
How much sleep should an eight-month-old get?
At eight months, your baby is likely to awake for far more extended periods than she was during her newborn days. However, she still requires a good deal of shut-eye. The average 8-month-old sleeps approximately 14 hours every 24 hours, while anything between 12 and 16 hours is considered typical.
Babies of this age can often sleep for nine to twelve hours at night and three to four hours during the day. During the day, sleep is often divided between a morning and an afternoon nap.
Sample sleep schedule for an 8-month-old
By eight months, the majority of babies have developed a pretty regular sleep schedule. At the same time, different schedules work well for different kids (and their families! ), the majority of 8-month-olds nap in the morning and afternoon and sleep for nine to 11 hours at night.
This month, though, another sleep regression may occur (more on that below), interfering with your baby's schedule.
Are you wondering what a typical day should look like for your eight-month-old? This is an example of a nap and nighttime sleep pattern (this schedule assumes your little one takes two naps a day between one and two hours).
What is a sleep regression of eight months?
At this stage in your parenting adventure, you may be familiar with sleep regression — a brief disruption in your baby's schedule during which she wakes up more frequently at night or has a difficult time falling asleep.
When a baby reaches a significant developmental milestone, sleep regressions may occur. Learning a new skill — and wanting to practise it continuously! — might make your child restless.
The first significant sleep regression often occurs at 4 months, but regressions can occur at 6 months and between 8 and 10 months when older babies master crawling, pulling up, and even working on their first word.
The good news is that this new pattern will not last indefinitely. Once your baby gains control of her new skill, her sleep should return to normal, as long as you maintain a consistent sleep regimen and avoid introducing new habits when she awakens throughout the night (like rocking her back to sleep).
