On August 9, 1969, the American newspapers brought the horrible news that five people — including the movie star Sharon Tate — had been brutally murdered in a remote farm near Los Angeles. Warned by a hysterical housekeeper, police first found the dead body of young man Steven Parent, shot and stabbed several times in his car in the driveway. Further on, the bodies of Abigail Folger and Jay Frykowski were found, also stabbed to death on the grass. Inside, in the living room, lay the murdered bodies of the hairdresser Jay Sebring and Sharon Tate, who, moreover, was very pregnant with her first child with Roman Polansky. When leaving the house, the word “Pig” was left in blood on the front door, a reference to Piggies of The Beatles, a satirical song against the bourgeoisie.

One day later, the businessman Leno La Bianca and his wife Rosemary were murdered in their house by six cult members, including Leslie van Houten. With the blood of the victims was written on the walls “Rise”, “Helter Skelter” and “Death to Pigs”. The intention was to put the murders in the shoes of the blacks and thus start a race war.

A few months later, during what was to be the longest trial in American history, the repulsive truth came to light. The murders in the home of director Roman Polanski, to whom Sharon Tate was married, were the work of three members from a group who called themselves the “Family”. This family was a cult built by Charles Manson.

None of the victims of this massacre were known to the killers. They were killed because Manson had decided, “Now it's time for Helter Skelter.” And Helter Skelter meant the last war on Earth. Or as Susan 'Sadie Mea'Atkins put it: 'it would be like all the wars that have ever been fought, stacked one on the other... you don't know how to imagine what it would be if every man judged himself and then avenged himself on all the other people around the world. ' Manson believed that a racial war between black and black was coming in which the blacks would win, but afterwards turned out incapable to rule and thus hand over the rule to Manson.

After the murders, the “Manson family” fled to Barker Ranch in Death Valley. Manson told his followers that the world would end and that the Bottomless Pit, a subterranean paradise that would be beneath Death Valley, was the only place they would be safe. There they were arrested at the end of 1969. The car that Tex Watson wanted to flee in is still in the desert.
