Herbivores: The plant-based eaters of the animal world
In nature, we find a wide range of animals with diverse dietary habits. An interesting group within this diversity are herbivores, animals that feed mainly or exclusively on plant material. These animals play a critical role in ecosystems around the world.
What are herbivores?
Herbivores are animals that feed on plants. This includes a wide range of foods such as grass, leaves, fruit, flowers, bark, and seeds. These animals often have special adaptations in their digestive system that enable them to effectively digest plant material and extract nutrients from them.

Mammals
- Horses : Feed mainly on grass and hay. They have a long digestive tract that helps them digest high-fiber foods.
- Elephants : Eat leaves, branches, fruit and bark. Their huge size requires a large amount of food, sometimes up to 150 kg per day.
- rabbits : Feed on grass, leaves and vegetables. They have a special fermentation process in their cecum to digest plant material.
- giraffes : Eat mainly acacia tree leaves. Their long necks allow them to reach food that is inaccessible to other animals.
- Koalas : Have a diet that consists primarily of eucalyptus leaves. They have a special digestive system that allows them to neutralize the toxins in these leaves.
- Hippos : Feed mainly on grass. Despite their cumbersome appearance, they can run fast to reach food.
- Reindeer : Feed on moss, grass and leaves. They have adaptations for living in cold environments, such as thick fur.
- Sheep : Feed on grass, hay and leaves.
- Alpacas : Eat grass, hay and leaves.
- Llamas : Feed on grass and other plant materials.
- Okapis : Eat leaves, fruit and bark. They are closely related to giraffes and live in the rainforests of Central Africa.
- Donkeys : Feed on grass, hay and straw.
- Camels : Eat grass, leaves and bushes. They are well adapted to living in dry, desert environments.
- Kangaroos : Eat grass and leaves. They have strong rear legs that enable them to jump long distances.
- Cows : Feed on grass, hay and silage.
- Zebras : Eat grass and leaves. They live in groups and are well adapted to life on the savannas of Africa.
- Guinea pigs : Eat grass, fruit and vegetables. They are popular pets and are native to the Andes in South America.
- Goats : Feed on grass, leaves and bushes.
- Rhinos : Eat grass and leaves. They are big, strong animals known for their thick skin and horns.
