Durante la época colonial, se edificaron en Isla de Margarita diversas construcciones de carácter militar, permitiendo la defensa de la isla frente a ataques de piratas o corsarios. Y la comunicación entre los puertos de Juan Griego, Pampatar y Porlamar, las 3 principales ciudades con mayor vida económica de la época.
Entre estas construcciones figuran dos castillos.
El Castillo Santa Rosa.
El Castillo San Carlos de Borromeo.
Y dos fortines: El Fortín de La Caranta y el Fortín de La Galera. Actualmente todas estas edificaciones pueden ser visitadas, permitiendo descubrir historias llenas de intrigas vinculadas a la historia de la colonia e independencia y disfrutar de espectaculares vistas al mar Caribe.
