New research reveals that Asian honeybees use their own droppings to fend off attacks, gluing animal droppings pellets into their nests to repel attacks by giant killer eagles.
They do this to protect their nests from possible attacks by heavily armored bumblebees, thus preventing them from wiping out the colony.
According to a study conducted by Wellesley College in the United States, the giant hornets studied belong to the "killer hornet" family. This seriously alarms North American beekeepers (both in the U.S. and Canada), as they take bee larvae to feed their own young, while bees in Europe and North America have not developed these defenses, making them "easy prey".
Professor Heather Mattila, leader of the research team, was surprised by the use of feces, because bees have a good reputation for being clean, have warm, humid, permanent homes, which are a great place for them to grow up without diseases and are full of babies and food". This is an interesting method of protection. It seems to be the product of an ongoing evolutionary race. To defend themselves, bees chase away hornets with their own feces.
This surprised the U.S. scientists, as these bees are known to be particularly clean, to prevent the spread of diseases in the hives.
The mounds of droppings are unbearable for hornets, so they tend to leave them alone. To date, the team still does not know why these pellets are particularly repulsive to them.
