Thinking a little about my hometown I wanted to look to share a brief overview of its history, which I found interesting
The city of Maracaibo was founded on September 8, 1529 by Ambrosio Alfinger. This explorer and trader, who was also the first Governor of the Province of Venezuela, entered the lake through the current ports of Altagracia.
There he founded a ranchery next to a village called Maracaibo by the indigenous people, in honor of Cacique Mara. However, it is said that the origin of this name derives from “Maara-iWO”, or place where snakes abound.
The founding of Maracaibo went through several moments and sites, even the reason for serious discussions among historians. However, on August 24, 1965, an agreement was reached that was read and published by the Zulia State History Center — the current Academy of the History of Zulia.
The following dates are accepted in the document: September 8, 1529 by Alfonso Alfinger, under the name of Villa de Maracaibo, with a population of only 30 inhabitants, who were transferred in 1535 to Cabo de la Vela on the Guajira Peninsula, by the German explorer and chronicler Nicolás Federmann. In addition, its two refoundations are indicated: in 1569 and 1574.
In mid-1569, captain Alonso Pacheco founded Nueva Ciudad Rodrigo; Pacheco had been entrusted by Governor Pedro Ponce de León to reconquer and populate the Maracaibo Lagoon, as well as provide a more expeditious communication route to New Granada. In 1574, Captain Pedro Maldonado, by order of Governor Diego de Mazariegos, refounded this town under the name of Nueva Zamora de la Laguna de Maracaibo.
The capital of Zuliana is known as the land of the beloved sun, many are the songs — especially bagpipes — that have been dedicated to it. This lake city has its way out to sea through Lake Maracaibo, a fertile oil supplier. It has an extension of 557 Km2, and a hot climate exceeding 42°. The top engineering work that represents the city is the Rafael Urdaneta Bridge.
History and culture are shown in: Government Palace, Legislative Palace, Cathedral Church, Basilica of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, La Chinita Fair, Maracaibo Fine Arts Centre, Maracaibo Lía Bermúdez Art Center (CAMLB), Baralt Theatre, Museum of Contemporary Art of Zulia (MACZUL). It is also home to proceres, athletes and artists, such as: Rafael Urdaneta, Ricardo Aguirre, Humberto Fernández Morán, Luis Aparicio, Pachencho Romero, Felipe Pirela, Cheo García, Mario Suárez.
