#shortstory Los Toros Coleados is a popular demonstration rooted in the memory of Venezuelans. Its origin is related to the history of livestock farming in the country. Since the middle of the 16th century, with the formation of the first livestock herds, it is very feasible that they were forced to catch a bull that escaped from the herd, chasing it and taking it by the tail until it is knocked down. The habit of “coleus” was established as a practice of the man of the plains in 1780; this is demonstrated by some complaints that censored custom made by lieutenants of justice in some villages of the region.
This activity has an ancient Spanish fate called “fate of the demolition”, “harassment” or the “rejón campero”, which consists of chasing on horseback and shooting down a bull in the middle of the race, by means of a pole or rod, supporting it on the animal's ring, making strength to lay it down to the opposite side.
In the 19th century it became a popular entertainment, with the participation of the public that crowded into the “mangas” that were improvised in the streets of cities and towns on the occasion of some holiday. Caracas used to “colear” bulls between the corners of Candelaria and Romualda, Carmen and Municipal, on the main street of San Juan and in nearby towns. During the Monagas government (1847-1858), this fun gained a lot of boom, as military, cattle breeders and young fans participated in it, accompanied by musical ensembles and awarded with coins thrown, from the balconies, by the “ricachones” from Caracas, and with the flowers given by beautiful girls.
Over time, it became a violent, instinctive sport that unites man, horse and bull in competition. There were no rules. Years later regulations were created, with requirements and sanctions, that make the “bulls coleados” a sport. Coleus is also conceptualized as a sport because it has categories, championships and qualifications, physical faculties, training and skill that give it a competitive and recreational character.
The bulls are carried out outdoors, on a runway or coleus sleeve fitted on flat terrain, measuring 230 to 280 meters long and 10 to 12 meters wide, enclosed with 2 meters high railings, and constructed of metal tubes (the first sleeves were made of wood).
The following factors participate in the competition:
The hair hair: main protagonist of this activity. On his horse he seeks to take down the bull in the middle of the race, grabbing him by the tail. His performance makes him the center of attention of the party.
El Caballo: Make 80% of the effort taken to bring down the bull; it is essential to do the cocel. There are different races: Quarter of Mile, Morgan, Anglo arabe, Creole and others, all distinguished by their docility, strength and nobility.
El Toro: Complete the trilogy necessary to make the coleada. On its characteristic depends largely on the success of the show.
Judges: The competition is monitored by three judges: the central one, the coso and the stopper.
Four hair shifts are organized to compete, which have two ways of colear on the day of the day.
The bulls coleados the central judge is located in the main rostrum, monitors everything that happens in the sleeve, imposes the order, enforces the regulations and moreover, by means of a speaker, narrates the competition at the time when it is being developed. The twist phrases and lexicon used in the judge-narrator description are typical of this activity; the pace of action and style are specific to each judge.
