The virgin of the Chiquinquirá

The month of November is of special significance for the people of Zulia, since during this month the celebrations in honor of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá or La Chinita, as the people of Zulia call her, take place. It is for this reason that during these days, the gaita sounds with special frenzy and joy throughout Zulia, There are numerous festivities in honor of the Virgin, perhaps the most impressive is the so-called Amanecer Gaitero, in which the people of Maracaibo congregate in the early morning of the 18th in the square of the Basilica, to sing the Mañanitas and Happy Birthday to the Chinita.

According to the Zulian tradition, the Chinita arrived in Maracaibo on the waves of the lake. The story goes that one day in 1749, a simple woman had just finished washing her clothes on the shores of Lake Maracaibo, when she suddenly saw a thin wooden plank floating, which she picked up thinking that it could be useful to cover the water jar she had in her house. The next morning, when she was brewing the coffee, the woman heard some knocking as if someone was calling. She went to see what was happening and was overwhelmed with astonishment when she saw that the little board was shining and that the image of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá appeared on it. For this reason, the woman began to shout "Miracle! Miracle!", which is why the current avenue next to the lake, where the little house of the washerwoman was located, is called El Milagro (The Miracle). After what happened, many people came to witness the miracle, turning the house of the humble woman in a place of veneration of the Virgin by many believers.

Eventually, the authorities of Maracaibo decided to hold a procession in honor of the Chinita. Legend has it that the Virgin was carried on the shoulders of two men chosen by the Governor himself, when when turning a corner, the image became so heavy that it was impossible to continue moving it. Finally, after many pleas to heaven and supplications to the Virgin, one of those present exclaimed: "Perhaps the Virgin does not want to go to the Iglesia Matriz and prefers the Church of San Juan de Dios".

According to popular tradition, these words were taken as a divine inspiration, since the procession changed its course towards the church of the humble people of Maracaibo and the image recovered its normal weight. That is why, since that day, the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, the beloved Chinita, protects the people of Zulia from her temple, today a basilica.

At present the house where the discovery was made is a majestic temple home of our Holy Patroness in which the holy sacrifice of the mass is celebrated and that miraculous tablet in which the sacred image is reflected, is proudly exposed on this altar, where we can see with great clarity the indescribable and sovereign appearance of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá. The street where the house was located took from that moment the name of Calle del Milagro (Miracle Street).

La virgen de la Chiquinquirá

El mes de noviembre es de especial significación para el pueblo zuliano, ya que durante el mismo se llevan a cabo las celebraciones en honor a La Virgen de la Chiquinquirá o de la Chinita como le decimos los zulianos, es por este motivo que durante estos días, la gaita suena con especial frenesí y alegría en todo el Zulia, hay  las numerosas fiestas en honor a la Virgen, quizás la más impresionante sea el llamado Amanecer Gaitero, en el que el pueblo de Maracaibo se congrega en la madrugada del día 18 en la plazoleta de la Basílica, para cantarle a la Chinita las Mañanitas y el Cumpleaños Feliz.

De acuerdo con la tradición zuliana, la Chinita llegó a Maracaibo sobre las olas del lago. Cuenta la historia que un día del año 1749, una sencilla mujer acababa de lavar su ropa en las orillas del lago de Maracaibo, cuando repentinamente vio flotando una tablita de madera fina, la cual recogió pensando en que le podría ser útil para tapar la tinaja de agua que tenía en su casa. A la mañana siguiente, cuando estaba colando el café, la mujer escuchó unos golpes como si alguien estuviera llamando. Fue a ver lo que sucedía y quedó sobrecogida de asombro al ver que la tablita brillaba y que aparecía en ella, la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá. Por tal motivo, la mujer comenzó a gritar ¡Milagro! ¡Milagro!, por lo que de ahí proviene el nombre de El Milagro a la actual avenida junto al lago, donde estaba la casita de la lavandera. Luego de lo sucedido, numerosas personas acudieron a presenciar el prodigio, convirtiéndose por esto la casa de la humilde mujer en un lugar de veneración de la Virgen por parte de múltiples creyentes.

Esto con el tiempo las autoridades de Maracaibo decidieron realizar una procesión en honor de la Chinita. Cuenta la leyenda, que la Virgen era llevada en hombros por dos hombres elegidos por el propio Gobernador, cuando al doblar una esquina, la imagen se puso tan pesada que impidió seguir moviéndola. Finalmente, después de muchos ruegos al cielo y súplicas a la Virgen, uno de los presentes exclamó: "Tal vez la Virgen no quiera ir a la Iglesia Matriz y prefiera la de San Juan de Dios".

Según la tradición popular, estas palabras se tomaron como una inspiración divina, ya que, la procesión cambió su rumbo hacia la iglesia de la gente humilde de Maracaibo y la imagen recuperó su peso normal. Es por esto, que desde ese día, la Virgen de la Chiquinquirá, la querida Chinita, protege desde su templo, hoy basílica, al pueblo zuliano.

En la actualidad la casa donde se efectuó el hallazgo se levanta un majestuoso templo hogar de nuestra Santa Patrona en el cual se celebra el santo sacrificio de la misa y aquella tablita milagrosa en la cual se encuentra reflejada la imagen sagrada, se expone con orgullo en este altar, donde podemos ver con gran claridad la indescriptible y soberana aparición de la Virgen de Chiquinquirá. La calle donde estaba la casa tomó desde ese momento el nombre de Calle del Milagro

It's very good to keep those traditions alive. I remember when I was little the procession of the Holy Heart with the pastor who carried the monstrans in the procession. Today all these traditions in the little villages here in the Flanders are almost all gone. It's really sad.
