Hoe denken buitenlanders over Nederlanders?

Door andere ogen. We vinden onszelf ontzettend tolerant, ruimdenkend, nuchter en gezellig. Hoe zien mensen uit andere landen dat? Wat vinden zij van ons?

Direct voelt onbeleefd
Om te weten te komen wat mensen uit andere landen van ons vinden, zou je het aan toeristen kunnen vragen. Maar mensen die al iets langer in Nederland meedraaien, kennen ons nét iets beter. Daarom hielden Peteke Feijten en Sjoerd Kooiker van het SCP vier groepsgesprekken met 26 expats uit verschillende westerse landen. Zij woonden en werkten hier op dat moment al een paar jaar. Wat vonden zij van ons? ‘Een van de dingen die buitenlanders altijd meteen opvalt is inderdaad de directheid van Nederlanders’, zegt Kooiker. Dat waren de meesten van hen niet gewend. In hun eigen land blijven dingen veel vaker onuitgesproken. Of ze gebruiken in elk geval subtielere woorden om iets duidelijk te maken. Feijten: ‘Ze moesten erg aan onze directheid wennen. Ze vinden het in eerste instantie behoorlijk onaardig en onbeleefd.’

Ik heb in mijn loopbaan als boekhouder in een firma veel te maken gehad met klanten uit diverse landen en ik moet zeggen dat een Nederlander heel mondig is en zijn assertiviteit soms wat dreigend overkomt als je het niet gewoon bent. Op den duur weet je het toch wel te plaatsen hoor.
