Gabriel García Márquez plaatste het Spaans-Amerikaanse verhaal in de voorhoede van de wereldliteratuur met zijn werk Honderd Jaren van Eenzaamheid (gepubliceerd in 1967). Dit is wereldwijd een van de meest bestudeerde en bekende verhalen.
Het is het verhaal van zeven generaties van de familie Buendia in de stad Macondo. Macondo's stichtend patriarch José Arcadio Buendia en Ursula Iguarán, zijn vrouw en nichtzus, laten Riohacha Colombia achter om een beter leven en een nieuw thuis te vinden.
