Rabbits are extremely popular as pets, and their lifespans have increased in recent years, partly due to the high standard of care provided by their owners.
Domestic Rabbits: A Brief History
Domesticated pet rabbits are distinct from the wild cottontail rabbits that frequent your yard. Pet rabbits are called Oryctolagus cubiculum, whereas wild rabbits are called Lepussylvaticus. This means that even while pet rabbits and wild rabbits are distant cousins and belong to the same family, they are technically distinct species.

Rabbits have historically been used for food and fur, but they have also been kept as beloved pets since the nineteenth century. Rabbits became more prevalent in homes around America in the late twentieth century, and their popularity has continued to expand since then. As more people became aware of pet bunnies' endearing traits, their care improved, extending the longevity of house rabbits.
The lifespan of Rabbit Breeds
While the typical lifespan of a pet rabbit is approximately 5-10 years, some breeds of pet rabbits are known to live significantly longer. As with dogs, small or dwarf rabbit breeds live longer than gigantic ones. Dwarf rabbits, micro lop, and other small bunnies generally live into their teens, whereas huge varieties such as French lop and Flemish giants do not.
Diet and Lifespan of Rabbits
As with any other species, a rabbit has unique nutritional requirements, and all know that the food feeds our pet bunnies directly affects their lifespan. Nutrition is inextricably linked to a rabbit's entire health. If it isn't getting the proper vitamins, minerals, fiber content, and other elements in its food, it will suffer from poor health and hence live shorter.
A pet rabbit's diet should consist of rabbit-specific pelleted meals, hay, and veggies. While certain snacks and fruits are OK in moderation, feeding an uneven diet results in an unhealthy rabbit. While some people feed their rabbits pellets purchased at a pet store, this may be deficient in the vitamins and minerals required by a rabbit.
Health and Longevity of Rabbits
Apart from the food you provide your rabbit, various factors contribute to its health. Rabbits can contract infections or parasites, which, if left untreated, can result in your rabbit's death. Maintaining proper hygiene by washing your hands before and after touching your rabbit, as well as cleaning your rabbit's cage regularly, are effective strategies to keep your rabbit healthy. Regular veterinarian visits will also aid in detecting any problems that may arise in your rabbit before it is too late to correct them.
Female rabbit are predisposed to breast and uterine cancers, while male rabbits are predisposed to testicular cancer. By spaying or neutering your rabbit, you significantly reduce your rabbit's risk of developing cancer and boost its chances of living a long life.
Lifespan and Habits of Rabbits
Rabbits require a great deal of space and mental stimulation, although many people believe they are content to spend their entire lives in a cage. While rabbits can live both indoors and outdoors, they want spacious rooms to call their own, such as a bedroom, as well as toys, chew toys, and items to play on. Rabbits that do not have adequate space and enrichment are typically less healthy and do not live as long as they should.
Additionally, it is critical to give your rabbit a secure home. Excessive stress may result in the death of your rabbit. Being taunted by a cat or dog, being grabbed by a child, or being harmed can send your rabbit into shock and cause it to die.
The Recorded Oldest Rabbit
According to Guinness World Records, the oldest rabbit to ever live was a wild-born rabbit named Flopsy, who died at the age of slightly more than 18 years. Flopsy was apprehended in 1964 in Australia and lived in Longford, Tasmania, with his owner, L.B. Walker. Given that most rabbits do not live past the age of ten owning a teenage bunny is quite an accomplishment for a pet owner.
