Introduction
After two decades of indirect military assistance, President John F. Kennedy dispatched the first significant contingent of US military units to Vietnam in 1961 to support the ineffective authoritarian rule of South Vietnam against the communist State.
President Lyndon B. Johnson launched limited bombing assaults on North Vietnam three years ago, when the South Vietnamese government crumbled, and Congress authorized the deployment of American soldiers. North Vietnamese offensive operations in 1965 forced President Lyndon B. Johnson to choose between escalating US engagement or withdrawing. The former was ordered by Johnson, and the number of troops quickly climbed to over 300,000 as US warplanes launched the greatest bombing election in history.
Duration of the Vietnam War
The prolonged length of the wartime, the large number of American losses, and the discovery of US complicity in war criminals, such as the slaughter at My Lai, successfully turned many Americans against the Vietnam War over the next few years. The Tet Offensive of the revolutionaries in 1968 dashed American expectations of a quick resolution to the conflict and galvanized American resistance to the conflict. In reaction, Johnson declared in March 1968 that he would not run for reelection, emphasizing what he saw as his role in fomenting a dangerous national schism over Vietnam. He also gave his approval for the start of peace negotiations.
Peace Agreement for Conclusion of Vietnam War
In January 1973, delegates from the US, North and South Vietnam, and the Vietcong inked a ceasefire agreement in Paris, thereby terminating the official US armed services intervention in Vietnam. Its main terms were a nationwide cease-fire, the departure of US forces, the liberation of war prisoners, and the peaceful unification of Northerners and Southerners. The Viet Cong administration was to stay in power until fresh elections could be conducted, and Viet Cong soldiers in the south were never to advance or be strengthened.
End of the Vietnam War
The final American combat soldiers depart South Vietnam 2 months after the Vietnamese negotiated settlement is signed, Hanoi releases the remaining American detainees held in North Vietnam. The United States' eight-year direct involvement in the Vietnam War came to an end. Approximately 7,000 civilian personnel of the United States Department of Defense stayed in Saigon to assist South Vietnam in waging what appeared to be a violent and continuous battle with communist North Vietnam.
In actuality, the accord was a kind of the US administration's attempt to save face. The cease-fire was broken even before the last American soldiers left on March 29, and by january 1974, comprehensive combat had begun. South Vietnamese government stated at the end of 1974 that 80,000 of their military and civilians had been fatally wounded during the year, giving it the most expensive of the War In Vietnam.
Bottom Line: Congress View - The Timeframe of Vietnam War
"The timeframe commencing on Feb. 28, 1961, and concluding on May 7, 1975... in the context of veteran soldiers and survivors who fought in the Republic of Vietnam throughout that time," and "starting on Aug. 5, 1964, and continuing on May 7, 1975... in all other circumstances," according to Parliament.
According to the paper "U.S. Durations of Conflict and Times of Modern Wars," published for lawmakers and bodies of Congress by the Pew Research Center.
