There are 26 letters in the English Alphabet. The modern English Alphabet begins with "A" and concludes with the letter "Z." Around the 7th century, the English Alphabet was developed from Latin script. The Greek Alphabet's first two letters, alpha, and beta are combined to form the alphabet word.

Total Number of Letters in the Alphabets

  • The first 23 letters of the 29 original Old English Alphabet recorded in the year 1011 by the monk Byrhtferð are (A B C D E F G H I K L M N O P Q R S T V X Y Z). The following six letters (& ⁊ Ƿ Þ Ð Æ) were dropped from the Old English alphabet.
  • J, U, and W are three Old English letters that have been added in the 16th century. The letters J and U were added, and W became an independent letter.
  • The English Alphabet had 27 letters until 1835: the ampersand (&) was the 27th letter of the Alphabet, right after "Z."
  • Today, the Modern English Alphabet has 26 letters: 23 from Old English and three added later.

History of Alphabets

An old English monk named Byrhtferð recorded the Alphabet of 29 in the year 1011. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Y, Z, &, ⁊, Ƿ, Þ, Ð, Æ . The last six letters (& ⁊ Ƿ Þ Ð Æ) are no longer used in modern English.
